Shinedown is an American rock band from Jacksonville, Florida formed by singer Brent Smith in 2001.  The current lineup includes Brent Smith (lead vocals), Zach Myers, (lead guitar), Eric Bass (bass, piano, backing vocals) and Barry Kerch (drums).  The band has released six studio albums and sold more than ten million records worldwide including 13 number one singles on Billboards Mainstream Rock charts tying Van Halen for the second most all time.

Shinedown’s music has most commonly been described as hard rock, alternative metal, post-grunge and arena rock with Southern Rock influences.

Shinedown cites Stone Temple Pilots, Otis Redding, Pink Floyd and Iron Maiden as influences.  Principal songwriter Brent Smith also counts Chris Cornell, Etta James, The Doors, Metallica and others among his influences.

Frontman Brent Smith recruited what eventually became Shinedown upon the dissolution of his previous band Dreve.  Upon recording some demos the newly formed band recorded their debut album 2003’s Leave a Whisper.  While the album initially met with little attention success came through more than 24 months of constant touring, along with the release of several singles including a cover of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Simple Man.”  These efforts eventually propelled album sales to more than one million in America.

While constant touring left the band exhausted and with little time to write new music Shinedown eventually coalesced to record their second album 2005’s Us and Them.  While the album debuted higher on the Billboard charts than its predecessor it failed to match it in sales.

Following several tumultuous years of band infighting, drug abuse and band members coming and going Shinedown recorded their third album 2008’s The Sound of Madness.  The album was an immediate hit selling more than 50,000 copies in its opening week.  Six singles were released from the album each one topping a Billboard rock music chart.  Of particular note was the single “Second Chance,” which crossed over the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 peaking at number seven, and eventually receiving triple platinum certification for sales of more than three million records sold.  Through the album’s successful singles and extensive touring The Sound of Madness became Shinedown’s best selling record residing on Billboard’s 200 charts for more than two years and selling more than two million copies.

In February 2017 bassist Eric Bass had completed more than 22 pieces of music over the course of Shinedown’s 2016 tour, apart from the rest of the band who wanted to concentrate on touring.  Smith was impressed with the new tunes envisioning a concept album which would be the band’s first.  In March 2018, Shinedown announced the album’s title, Attention Attention, and released its first single, “Devil.”  The single would eventually reach number one on the Active Rock and Mainstream Rock charts.  Attention Attention was released in May 2018 and was Shinedown’s first album to be produced and mixed entirely by a band member (Eric Bass).  The album debuted at number 1 on the Top Rock Albums, Hard Rock Albums, and Alternative Albums charts.  It was the second time the band had achieved that feat.

In November 2018 Shinedown’s second single from Attention Attention “Get Up” became the Florida rockers 11th top 10 single, breaking the band out of a tie with Foo Fighters for the most top 10’s in the chart’s nine-year history.

The new single “Daylight” from Planet Zero (released July 1, 2022 ) is real pandemic anthemic, genuinely hopeful and loving.
