Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds are an English rock band formed in 2010 as the solo moniker of former Oasis lead guitarist and songwriter Noel Gallagher. The touring band consists of former Oasis bassist Gem Archer, former Oasis session pianist Mike Rowe, former Oasis drummer Chris Sharrock and The Zutons bassist Russell Pritchard.
Since Gallagher’s 2009 departure from Oasis speculation was ripe that he would record a solo album. In 2011 Gallagher released the project’s self-titled debut album. In 2015 Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds released their second album, Chasing Yesterday. Their third album Who Built the Moon? followed in 2017.
Two sources inspired the band’s name. The idea to prefix the name with “Noel Gallagher’s” was formed while he was washing dishes listening to the album Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac, while the latter part of the name is taken from the Jefferson Airplane song “High Flying Bird.”
Gallagher’s solo career began in earnest upon the 2011 demise of his band Oasis with the release of his debut single “The Death of You and Me” to positive reviews. Gallagher’s second solo album was a collaboration with Amorphous Androgynous the British electronic music group and dropped in 2012. The album revealed a psychedelic tripped out sound similar to Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon.
In February 2018 Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds toured Europe and the United Kingdom. In May 2019 the band released the Black Star Dancing EP the first of three scheduled 2019 EPs. September 2019 sees the release of the second EP This Is the Place. Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds will spend the rest of 2019 touring in support of U2 and Smashing Pumpkins.
