Neko Case is an American singer-songwriter best known for her solo career and as a member of the Canadian indie rock group The New Pornographers.

Case an Alexandria, Virginia native traveled throughout the country when she was young living in Massachusetts, Vermont, Oregon, and Washington though she considers Tacoma, Washington her hometown.  Case currently resides in Vermont.

In 1994 Case moved to Vancouver, British Columbia to attend Art and Design school.  While there she played drums in several local punk bands and a country music group.  While in Vancouver Case recorded vocals for a few songs that ended up on Mass Romantic The New Pornographers debut album.  Her lead vocals on songs like “Letter from an Occupant” were straightforward, full volume power-pop performances.  Released in 2000 Mass Romantic became a surprise hit.  Although originally conceived as a side project for its members The New Pornographers remain a prominent presence in the indie rock world releasing their seventh album Whiteout Conditions in 2017.

In addition to continue to record with The New Pornographers Case frequently collaborates with other Canadian musicians and has recorded material by several noted Canadian songwriters, in particular on her 2001 EP Canadian Amp.  As a result Case is considered a significant figure in Canadian music.

On her solo work and collaborations outside The New Pornographers Case has fully embraced country music.  Her 1997 album, The Virginian contained originals mixed with covers of songs by Loretta Lynn and other country pioneers.  Critics compared Case to honky-tonk singers like Lynn and Patsy Cline.  On her second solo album, Furnace Room Lullaby Case introduced “country noir” elements that have defined her subsequent solo career.  On this album Case’s vocal style moves away from outright honky-tonk but retains her twang garnering comparisons to Tanya Tucker and Dolly Parton.

Case recorded and toured for several years as Neko Case & Her Boyfriends before performing solo under her own name.  She primarily performs her own material but also performs and has recorded cover versions of songs by artists such as My Morning Jacket, Neil Young, Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, Hank Williams among others.

Case continues to record and tour with The New Pornographers and sings lead on several songs on every one of their albums.  Case’s 2009 album Middle Cyclone debuted at No. 3 on the charts making it her first top ten album in the United States.  Case released her first solo album titled Hell-On in five years in 2018.
